With the hiring of Dr. Afia Zakiya as the executive director of the Africatown Heritage Preservation Foundation, hopes are that the historic settlement
is on the way to becoming more economically impowered.
Dr. Zakiya, a Pascagoula, Mississippi native, is a globally recognized African centered Political Ecologist, Africana Studies scholar-activist, International
Affairs and Public Policy, Health and Organizational Development expert.
Committed to ending global inequality and oppression, she has worked
for over 20 years in communities and researched Black/Africana
thought and experiences in the U.S., Brazil and in 22 African countries.
Her Pan African activism, lectures and scholarship challenge dominant knowledges produced about African people and culture.
-ADVERTISMENT-

Hattie strongly and proudly stated that she did the
best she could. She went on to state that she worked not only for herself but thought she was working for future generations of African-Americans as well.
